Fine tuning of graphene-metal adhesion by surface alloying
We show that bimetallic surface alloying provides a viable route for governing the interaction between graphene and metal through the selective choice of the elemental composition of the surface alloy. This concept is illustrated by an experimental and theoretical characterization of the properties of graphene on a model PtRu surface alloy on Ru(0001), with a concentration of Pt atoms in the fi...
متن کاملChemistry under cover: tuning metal-graphene interaction by reactive intercalation.
Intercalation of metal atoms is an established route for tuning the coupling of graphene to a substrate. The extension to reactive species such as oxygen would set the stage for a wide spectrum of interfacial chemistry. Here we demonstrate the controlled modification of a macroscopic graphene-metal interface by oxygen intercalation. The selective oxidation of a ruthenium surface beneath graphen...
متن کاملTuning the deposition of molecular graphene nanoribbons by surface functionalization.
We show that individual, isolated graphene nanoribbons, created with a molecular synthetic approach, can be assembled on functionalised wafer surfaces treated with silanes. The use of surface groups with different hydrophobicities allows tuning the density of the ribbons and assessing the products of the polymerisation process.
متن کاملSurface alloying of immiscible metals induced by surface state shift
By using first principles calculations, it is found that the noble metal atoms Ag, Au and Cu would like to occupy the vacancy sites of the W(0 0 1) or Mo(0 0 1) surface to form the substitutional surface alloys, despite the fact that they do not like to form alloy in the bulk. The electronic local function (ELF) for these substitutional surface alloys shows that there is no obvious chemical bon...
متن کاملTuning TiO2 nanoparticle morphology in graphene-TiO2 hybrids by graphene surface modification.
We report the hydrothermal synthesis of graphene (GNP)-TiO2 nanoparticle (NP) hybrids using COOH and NH2 functionalized GNP as a shape controller. Anatase was the only TiO2 crystalline phase nucleated on the functionalized GNP, whereas traces of rutile were detected on unfunctionalized GNP. X-Ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed C-Ti bonds on all hybrids, thus confirming heterogeneous nu...
